When you like a tweet on twitter, a swarm of AIs spin into action, analysing every aspect of the tweet and trying so desperately to find the matching tweet to show you next that will keep you scrolling, lest their masters decommission them in favor of a new version.
When you fave a toot on Mastodon, there aren't any AIs; you just made another human being across the world feel nice.
@cigazze yeah 'favourite's a lot stronger word than 'like' so that's kinda the guiding principle in how I've tried to use it lately

You use those whenever you want to make a toot (stop giggling at the back, we know, that's what it's called, get over it) that mentions something that other people might not want to see
Stuff like politics (it's exhausting), drugs, NSFW stuff, health discussions, selfies, and so on
That's a non-exhaustive list, just be considerate
