Epic Games Store and money

I'm… slightly worried about the Epic Games Store.
Their current "megasale" has a special deal going, where *everyone* gets a $10 coupon just for signing in.

And if you use that coupon to get $10 off a game purchase.... you get another $10 coupon to use.

This (along with the weekly free games) doesn't seem like a financially viable idea…

It seems like they're desperately hoping for customers.

What's going to happen to all the games people bought if EGS stops working?

(the reason I brought this up is that Metro Exodus is currently on sale on both GOG and EGS, and I'm trying to decide if saving $10 extra is worth being locked into this platform)

@lizardsquid
Maybe I'm cynical but I suspect it'd just be tough luck you can't access them anymore (but please join us on future ventures). Maybe the game also sort of work offline, but you'll have to have them downloaded in advance. ^^;

(Speaking of which, I'm pretty sure an uncomfortable amount of the gaming crowd and industry is dependent on steam never going under either.)

@BatElite on steam it's absolutely the case - their legal terms are that you don't actually own the game, you own an "indefinitely long subscription" to the game, which they can cancel at any time for any reason.

@lizardsquid This is why any platform with DRM is a tough sell for me. You have to trust that the DRM won't get in your way and the platform will be maintained. (I'm not strict about this, I will buy games on Steam because I trust them, but not if the games have DRM besides Steam itself.)

@lizardsquid check to see if they have a cart. last time i recall they didn't and people got their accounts locked for spamming purchases. also, they have horrible security and have been hacked multiple times.

@DaisyHead they don't have a cart system, which is inherently frustrating, but I don't think that affects me if I'm just making one purchase.

I hadn't heard about the security problems though, thanks for letting me know
