Question for you (the creature/robot/entity reading this): Do you play metroidvanias?
If so, which ones have you liked?
Are there any weird obscure ones that you rarely see folks talk about?
@lizardsquid Not regularly. I've played some of the GBA Castlevanias, and a lot of Rogue Legacy back when it was new, but I've got terrible reflexes and spacial memory.
@lizardsquid I'm blanking on the name (think it started with a K? Kith / Kin adjacent?) were you were a very tiny lady who is good at climbing, on a pilgrimage to ring a bunch of bells. and also a superball? then the ball and tiny lady fuse together & can swap between those forms. you mostly didn't get permanent power ups (so you could explore in p much any direction), but there were a variety of plants that gave you a temporary movement ability to solve puzzles. also shoulder fairies.
@lioness woah... this sounds amazing
@lizardsquid it was /huge/ too… I'll look up the name next time I'm on my computer
@lizardsquid I remember enjoying some of the "robot wants" games.
And "Escape from Puppy Death Factory", but that one doesn't seem to run well in Ruffle. :(
@lizardsquid other than Castlevania: SotN which is a classic, more recently I liked Timespinner and I'm part of the way through Souldiers - though, for Souldiers I wouldn't recommend the switch version because it performs very badly
@lizardsquid I'm not sure if this is up your alley or not, but Rogue Legacy has been one of my favorite games for the longest time. It's very twitchy but you get upgrades and new abilities and stuff as you go that make it so you can do fun long runs after a while and rack up money to spend on more upgrades. I love the rogue-lite sort of feel to it where it feels like the time you spent mattered. 💙💙💙
@Bwee @lizardsquid second vouch for Rogue Legacy! As someone pretty new to metroidvanias, I absolutely adored it. Great art style and soundtrack, too!
@gingerfish @lizardsquid I still have the game startup music in my head xD Loved that music!! I had forgotten about that! 💙💙💙
@lizardsquid Hollow Knight is the classic pick, and I also really loved Axiom Verge 1 and 2! For more obscure ones... I really enjoyed Vision: Soft Reset.
@lizardsquid Sundered was decent but hard. Unlike most metroidvanias you can and will be ambushed by enemies showing up when you were already in this screen.
It's also got a corruption/redemption thing going on, if you like that.
@lizardsquid I like Dead Cells and Ori. Sundered is fun but I haven't played it that much.
@lizardsquid A friend has been slowly introducing me to the genre! So far I've only played "Gato Roboto" which is a great fun introduction and "Blaze in the Deepblue" which I adored but would only recommend to fans of the Love Live franchise.
@lizardsquid Here's that friend's YouTube channel btw. Not all metroidvanias but definitely a highlighted subset!
@lizardsquid I'm a big fan of the momodora series
