I really need to prioritize making that forum
a revival of forums is something I think we really need
@Yarideki this is what I want more of - more spaces for in depth discussion, less discussions happening ephermerally in places like masto or reddit and then disappearing forever into a swarm of content
@lizardsquid part of my issue is I'll often favorite something for later, but then if I want to easily retrieve the topic later it likely involves loading all of my favorites and then hitting ctrl+F to find the things.
Not to mention that long posts are generally (99% of the time) better viewed on a forum as opposed to mastodon. I feel this is due to the ability to full text search in the forum's search and also for exactly what you mentioned.
@lizardsquid If there's one thing I don't like about here is the temporary nature of stuff here. For example I'd like for the thing I wrote yesterday to be kept somewhere despite it being mostly private. I don't think I've made particularly insightful comments here, but I don't like losing it.
I probably won't even read most of this stuff again, but I'd just like to be able to find it. This infinite-scroll stuff is the worst of both: permanent yet impossible to efficiently search through.
1/2
@lizardsquid Otherwise, and I don't know if this is something that forums back then were much better at, social communities nowadays sometimes just drop dead arbitrarily. I don't really want to lose contact with people like that.
@BatElite yeah, the lack of practical permanence with our current social networks is a huge problem - this whole discussion started because xkeeper posted a link to their blog post yesterday, but I sure as heck can't find that toot!
@lizardsquid I've seen that (about https://xkeeper.dreamwidth.org/9872.html , right?)
Have you also seen the one about Jul? I don't know if it's what you're looking for in a forum, but I'm not sure how feasible it is to start a new one.
@BatElite I'm going to look into it when I get to my computer, but from the surface, it's exactly the kind of thing I want
@lizardsquid Well, extra faces around there are always welcome. I doubt you have much of a problem abiding by rule 1.
@lizardsquid I do think that a forum revival would be a good thing. It might not be a bad idea to have more information focused sites than person focused ones. Not that the latter is a bad thing in cases like mastodon but with the other platforms…
