@softgoat I used to do this, but then I stopped (and then I came to a revelation about perception checks and how to do them and how D&D encourages you to do them wrongly)

@lizardsquid @softgoat I'm really fond of 4e's passive perception rule - it sets a baseline 'awareness' to work with if you need to know if stuff is coming. That way perception checks don't come up until they're actively searching, and you don't give away ambushes and the like for meta players.
