@catoutofbed@octodon.social @LottieVixen@dev.glitch.social here's a cool video where a level designer talks about this problem: youtube.com/watch?v=6ubu76gEvM

A story about a tiny dragon having to face a relatively huge and powerful knight.

@catoutofbed@octodon.social @LottieVixen@dev.glitch.social @witchfynder_finder I really liked it, because once you got used to it you could create all these cool spaces easily

I've found modern tools like unity kinda hard to design levels in? sure, it's easier to put stuff down but... I can't figure out how to prototype a map

@catoutofbed@octodon.social oh gosh

(also I hope your account name is not something you regret, like I know a lot of people's are...)

@catoutofbed@octodon.social @witchfynder_finder source games have been a huge part of my gaming history - I bought portal, and played a bunch of custom maps on it (and sadly all the repositories for these maps disappeared off the internet before anyone archived them D::
)

and then source mods were most of what I played for several years - I could never afford a huge amount of video games (which is also how I started speedrunning - no other games to play)

@catoutofbed@octodon.social @witchfynder_finder the new engine's main difference is that they tried to fix the bunnyhopping of the old engine and accidentally created ABHing

@catoutofbed@octodon.social @witchfynder_finder that's incorrect, here's how it works:

Old engine
* some older real time runs
* half life 2 done quick
* half life 2 done quicker

New engine
* what everyone doing rta (including me) actually runs on now
* dwahmov

@catoutofbed@octodon.social @witchfynder_finder ah, that one is on the old engine, which allows for all of those crazy clips

fun fact: every time they are out of bounds in that run, they have to save and load to move 1 inch

so in real time, this run would actually take *hours*

@witchfynder_finder also around when I stopped running it seriously was when they discovered a bunch of wall clipping glitches that require you to go to a very specific place and look at a very specific angle (so specific you basically need an output of your position on the screen), and I just... couldn't be bothered to memorise the numbers

@witchfynder_finder I've spent 250 hours playing Half Life 2 and I'm still awfully slow at it - it requires so much practice

@witchfynder_finder I used to speedrun:

* rayman 3 (until it was discovered you couldn't speedrun on PC ::/ )
* portal
* half life 2
* infamous: first light
* mirror's edge
* and a few others

reference, food

but what if... I were to purchase fast food, and cry about my poor eating habits?

Machine learning is important, but some AIs just want 2 nap and be small
