Meet Nan Madol, an abandoned city in Micronesia, near the island of Pohnpei. Nan Madol was the political and religious center of the Saudalur Dynasty, and its megalithic construction - which includes human-built islets and reefs - dates back about a thousand years.

oh my gosh I figured it out
by default the map editor makes every entity have a colour
the default colour is black

well, I discovered that it is not in fact the map compiler that's broken!
but my map
that's good, because it now means I *don't* have to rewrite quake 2's map compiler from scratch
but bad because I don't know why my lights aren't showing up
