@eri source: i'm from brazil, so i already know this whole story
@eri the import ban produced several unlicensed clones, such as gradiente's phantom system (NES), microdigital's TK series (sinclair computers and apple II) etc
it wasn't prohibitively expensive, it was prohibited at all because the military dictatorship at the time (until 1985) wanted brazil to fend for itself and make its own electronics rather than import them (it didn't work)
@eri tectoy bypassed the market protectionism which prohibited import of electronics by making a deal with sega of japan directly to allow them to manufacture the console right in brazil, proving the market demand a couple years earlier with the zillion toy gun

plurality can be just this bullshit handwavey concept you can craft yourself to better explain your shifts in personality and facets and identities and anyone who says otherwise is a rule-shitting gatekeeper

the "much more than a toy, almost a computer" tagline in this ad for the master system is especially funny to me because the master system shared a lot of hardware similarities with the msx
datassette is a good treasure trove for brazilian magazines of that era, especially about the MSX computer: https://datassette.org/revistas/msx
