@mrdiamondj@mstdn.games what makes you say that? AFAICR opengraph/twitter card metadata support has been around since 2017, when i was an instance admin.
@smellsofbikes @karinnelson website links will generally have some metadata to it that inform a title, description and thumbnail. different activitypub frontends will handle these differently. on mastodon's own frontend (i.e. web, not third-party apps) this will properly show a thumbnail and optionally an embed to the video, like twitter does.
in short: just link the video
