Modern #DevOps tooling assumes unlimited resources, and to hell with efficiency.

Upgrade? Destroy it and rebuild from scratch. Weird error? Destroy it and rebuild from scratch. Typo in the config? Destroy it and rebuild from scratch.

e.g. #docker *still* doesn’t have a way to rename volumes. You have to create a new one, copy the files across, then destroy the old. Don’t have double the disk space lying around? Then fuck off, peasant. Come back when you can afford a bigger box. 🤬

@atax1a @alyx_woodward i've made maple.pet/ditherinator which can use arbitrary palettes and dithering algos (especially multi-colour Atkinson) if that's something you're interested in

A picture of our cat Pebbles in Atkinson dithering.

Rest in peace, Bill Atkinson. Thanks for everything.

i already set up gitea on my vps once but i never used it and ended up shutting it down to free resources for other stuff, so

This kinda lines up with another quiet hot take I have: I'm not very fond of bridges between networks like ActivityPub, Bluesky, Nostr, etc. Maybe on a user-by-user utility basis. But, as a network-wide thing, there's too much context collapse.

Like, sure, from a tech lens they're just protocols carrying very similar data. But, from a user lens, they're communities and cultures, even if accidental and implicit.

Hot take: Defederation is feature, not a bug. Not everyone needs to talk to everyone all the time.
