So you know why social networks started curating timelines? Because as soon as the network gets too big, any timeline becomes a firehose and you start missing out on stuff.
This reminds me again of #IRC chat rooms. Those too are firehoses, and worse, you have to be online to drink from them. And I just realised,, I like this fine.
So I'm starting to think that I should lose my #FearOfMissingOut with Masto and just enjoy the ride. The good stuff will get boosted anyway so I'll end up seeing it.
I am only a man sitting and thinking and a poor student; but if you were to ask me for a prescription to fix this, I’d say:
Reach out to your friends, one-on-one. Let them know you care about them and they’re important to you. Their public selves may be well-connected, but their private selves may be an island starved of the real, deep connections they need to thrive.
It’s a big leap. But the rewards are so worth it.
@pawnshopheart i'm right here (no need to vague) and i *told* you i'm not a furry :'<
(but even if this isn't about me, i'm still not a furry.)
wtf is up with this design pattern on web apps where there are huge text fields for username and password on the home page and so you type in your username and password only to realize that the button below it says "Create an account!" and then you have to hunt for the tiny "ˢⁱᵍⁿ ⁱⁿ" button in the upper right-hand corner in order to actually sign in to your existing account?

I’m a front-end web developer, birdkeeper, rainforest bastard, and a former student of vertebrate paleontology (cretaceous theropod specialty) just trying to get along in this cruel world of furry-wigged titty sparkledogs.
I am forgetful and crass; I wouldn't recommend following if you NEED uncommon CW content tagged. otherwise feel free to send a request or ask that I tag for something
