mate is ok but it's hard to find the programs i want other than memorizing terminal lines
fvwm was nice but crashed too much
xfce has good usability but looks awful
@squirrel I'm quite fond of i3 but that's because I'm one of those bizarre individuals who prefers tiling window managers
@troubleMoney i could never do tiling wms ever
i just want nice window trimmings but that's too much to ask from linux
@squirrel ah yeah, pretty and nice have never really been development priorities
I've heard some good things about pop!_OS being nice to use, haven't tried it myself though
@troubleMoney looks too modern to me
i honestly just want it to look like irix but usable in a modern context
@squirrel ah, cool
I'll see if I can think of anything irix-y
@troubleMoney the closest i got was fvwm on ubuntu but it crashed so often that i got too frustrated about randomly losing all of my work because it had no fallbacks it just brought the whole fucking thing instantly down and kicked you back to the login manager and whoops all your work is gone if you didn't save it
@squirrel eesh, yeah, that's not good
openbox might be suited to making it look like irix, that one's very customisable
@troubleMoney the problem is i dont have the patience and knowhow and ability to customize it myself from scratch
you give me too many options and i just panic and cry not having any direction
i want to just pay someone to custom build me a linux desktop environment
@squirrel half of what comes out of my mouth is me thinking out loud
I'll see what I can find/come up with and then I'll come back with what I've worked out
@squirrel oh i was just doing some looking for you
maybe sawfish could work? it's a lot like fvwm
@squirrel oH MY GOSH MAPLE I FOUND A THING
so some weird company makes a port of 4dwm (the IRIX wm) called 5dwm that runs on Linux!!
and the install instructions are here: http://www.maxxinteractive.com/site/?page_id=529
and it looks like this!!!
@er1n yes that's maxx desktop like i said
it's
unfinished and buggy and doesn't work right on ubuntu
i tried
@er1n and the person who made it disappeared several times and then came back with new versions and every time he disappears the download links go offline and it's basically vaporware
@squirrel ewwww im sorry
@er1n not your fault
otherwise yes maxx desktop looks very pretty and very much something i want
@squirrel ohhh :(
sorry
@squirrel i didn't see that post
@squirrel i can help you if you have specific questions but not _right_ now
@squirrel feel free to like
send me a backlog of questions
@squirrel like, what are your specific goals? just changing the colors on this theme? because, like, once i know what theme it is i can try mirroring your setup locally and helping you out
@er1n i honestly dont know im sorry
i don't know what i want
i'll know when i see it but i can't picture it in my head
there's just a lot of tiny things about my setup i don't like
i probably need to format my hard drive and lose everything to replace xubuntu with actual ubuntu mate for mate to work properly anyway
and i don't think i even want mate
like my ideal system would be irix i guess but fvwm fatally crashes too much and maxx desktop is dead
@er1n im going to bed soon so maybe another day sorry
i dont know what questions i have
"how do i make things purple" i guess
@squirrel okay!!
@squirrel I'm happy to help, not right now as octopus needs sleep, but setting things up is like my favourite thing to do
@squirrel nope, you're definitely right about it being impossibe
@squirrel it is a serious issue with desktop linux tbh - none of the default desktop environments are worth a crap if you don't want their default everything and aren't willing to learn their One True Way of doing it by hand using scattered instructions in long dead forums.
It's not just you, bunbot
plus gnome themes just suck a lot and for some reason absolutely none of them use the gnome color customization on mate
like any theme i throw at it shows the theme's colors but actually changing them is grayed out like what's the point
