@vahnj @noelle thanks

deleting the whole folder from directly from S3 was much, much faster

@staticsafe@mastodon.zombocloud.com i'd like to think the file deletions could've been a little faster, deleting images should not be this slow one by one

is it just unoptmized

what's the difference between this rake task that's deleting images one by one and just doing a rm -rf preview_cards ?

@tinybarks@meows.life then i'll wait for someone who knows what they're doing to help me (which will be never, i think)

@tinybarks@meows.life because that's all that page tells you to do

@tom by default the entrypoint that chowns the entire mastodon folder every time you run a docker-compose command takes a really long time and i wish it would not

mainly i'm just skeptical that it's just

$ nano /etc/docker/daemon.json

{
"storage-driver": "aufs"
}

$ service docker restart

and nothing will be broken
(source: github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/)

i'd like reassurance on this but i don't think anyone uses docker

If anyone's having problems upgrading to 1.6 related to the charlock_holmes ruby library-

I found you can fix it by installing libgmp3-dev with apt.

It took me a while to uncover so I figure I'd just post it publicly

one day i'll learn what aufs is and how to use it with docker

today probably won't be that day

@TrollDecker i looked at the way to set up mastodon using docker and without and with was less scary and less work

@tinybarks@meows.life yeah now i remember this was the page i saw and the only instructions there are vague enough for it to make me scared of doing them on not-an-empty-instance because 1) i don't know the commands 2) i don't know if it'll break everything

wouldn't it be enough to create the user and change file permissions only once? why does mastodon want to execute that at every single time you run a docker-compose command?

i remember reading somewhere about using a different docker filesystem but i don't know what any of that means and i really wish anyone cared about this enough that i could get someone to tell me if that's the right thing or not and it just really needs to do a redundant thing every time you run docker-compose and it will be slow forever

is there a way to make the

Creating mastodon user (UID : 991 and GID : 991)...
Updating permissions...

process any faster? that's what eats most of the time upgrading mastodon

@tinybarks@meows.life nothing, but making the standard work is already more than the current status of neither standard nor hypothetical fork working
