@Elizafox peeling off the cap and disconnecting the anode gets your hand closer to it than using a long screwdriver to discharge it from a distance

Sony's service manual shows how to disconnect the anode and then says to just short that to the carbon coating of the tube or the chassis

other people short the anode without unplugging it by working a screwdriver under the cap

i think the second method is safer?? but i don't want to damage the rubber
