The mod Ruins spawns interesting things in the #Minecraft world, including stone heaps with ores you wouldn't find at that height, abandoned gardens and houses, shipwrecks, zombie nests, intact ships (full of zombies or something...)
The castle would be awesome to find close to your spawn; it has big fields and a bunch of bookcases.
