limited lives and continues are a relic of arcade games, where they existed to draw new quarters into the machines. They never really had a place in home gaming except to add artificial difficulty and punish experimentation, and should really be gone from consoles and computers entirely by this point, but inertia and "that's how it was when I was a kid so that's how it should be now" are powerful forces.
