like - look
there he is!
this guard dog of ancient mesopotamia is still with us!
Catcher Of The Enemy, still loved by humanity, still kept by humanity, still humanity's companion just as he was in 645 BCE.
tho i have to say one of my fav "people is people" moments of reaching out through history
is
these little clay dogs found in nineveh
buried as charms under a palace
each of them carved so lovingly, by a person that knows dogs, and looking like dogs that you can probably go find today looking the exact same
each of them inscribed with the quality of a good guard dog that people still prize today in good guard dogs
Loud is his bark!
Biter of his foe!

it's very easy to think of history as occupied by exclusively staid and stately figures, far-off and distant and only dignified, and it makes it all feel like they were less human and history is this far-off thing you shouldn't care about
but the little reminders that people were people -
cuneform tablets full of bad yelp reviews for an iron seller! pompeii graffiti that could fit in a modern truck stop bathroom! kinky victorian porn!
- make history real and present. and that's cool af!!!
man the tumblr purge still bums me out. it managed to nuke one of my fav blogs, thosenaughtyvictorians, and altho they've got a blogspot, there's just like two posts on it, not the repository of information
it wasn't even a hornt fav, but i just really like history for those moments when it's just - oh hey, people are people, and have been people
"nothing new under the sun", but without the cynicism, basically. you get to recognize the continuity there, and it becomes more real and present
very nsfw, but also it's me being a gigantic domestic history nerd
I FINALLY FOUND THE 1600S SEX MANUAL BOOK FOR REFERENCE AGAIN HOORAY
