One of the earliest sign I knew AI chatbots was going to be horrible for mental health was actually from my lived experience of using speech-to-text transcription.
Context: I am deaf, and I was born that way, and I grew up with hearing aids and got my cochlear when I turned 15. The cochlear, by itself, improved my speech accuracy to 75% from 25% with dual hearing aids.
During the pandemic, my speech comprehension skills worsened due to fundamentally lossy audio quality over Zoom.
@insom @turnipGod I suspect I don't have that version of xeyes, but I did learn I can `-geometry [W]x[H]` to make them much larger than they ought to be.
βThe totally cool way to run and network your computerβ sounds just as stupid as it did when I first got these boxes. I paid $2 for them at a HAM radio convention 11 years ago and theyβve just been sitting sealed ever since. Got them out of storage today and I think Iβll open them. (Thread time.)

New on the Secret Area, it's Cold Fear.
A Resident Evil-inspired survival horror game made by the folks who made Alone in the Dark: A New Nightmare. And it's surprisingly alright!
Shares and comments appreciated, as always.
Here are my current set-on-install about:config options for Firefox, as well as going through Settings and turning off anything related to telemetry, "studies", or a Mozilla product. I'm not sure I've captured everything. At one point I was trying to be real rigorous about documenting my preferences but as Firefox became more and more hostile it became harder to fight back in a systematic way
I just came across *the* most Geocities site to ever exist. You want to see this one, I promise. https://web.archive.org/web/20010722223545/http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Wharf/1014/
"You develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world, and a compulsion to do something about it. From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, βLook at that, you son of a bitch."

@TonicBH now these are the journalistic stands that I'll fight for. "Xth-gen" never sat well with me (and turns out to have been the domain of, like, two or three specific Wikipedians anyway).
