one nice thing that id Software's been doing with its official doom and quake remasters: they re-publish classic community mods as semi-official "add-ons" and interview the original designers https://slayersclub.bethesda.net/en/article/7hE8TVhxv582NcRLcJiDr8/nods-to-mods-interview-contract-revoked-for-quake
The failure of the Internet to deliver its promise is particularly noticeable when you hunt for repair manuals for a product from the 90s. Used to be, the information would either be there or not there, finable or unfindable.
Now, there are hundreds of algorithmically generated sites claiming to have it just because it appeared in their search logs, generating potemkin village content traps with endless paging, broken-thumbnail named-like-the-file-you-want but actually-just-ebay-photos bullshit
@iconolog Mmmm, 688 Attack Sub.
TIL that in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, as you level up the Skeleton Waiter soul, it throws out a progressively more sumptuous curry feast. Interestingly, the first level curry is clearly a Japanese style curry with a couple pixels of bright red pickled veg on the side, the second is a bit ambiguous, and the third is a south Indian style platter of different curries, chutneys, and some sort of bread (poori or naan, perhaps).
Sorry if reading this made you hungry!
So, I don't use this place as much as I probably should, my attention is split, but let me just give a mention to the game Chained Echoes, it's quickly become one of the best RPGs I've played lately, it's awesome.
But, the moment I knew this game was gonna be special? The song for the turtle race minigame.
@lowqualityfacts No one can tell me,
Nobody knows,
Where the wind comes from,
Where the wind goes.
It's flying from somewhere
As fast as it can,
I couldn't keep up with it,
Not if I ran.
But if I stopped holding
The string of my kite,
It would blow with the wind
For a day and a night.
And then when I found it,
Wherever it blew,
I should know that the wind
Had been going there too.
So then I could tell them
Where the wind goesβ¦
But where the wind comes from
Nobody knows.

Good morning, folks. Have a sysadmin tip:
When you ssh to a remote system, make it a habit to run either `screen` or `tmux` first. Always. Even for just a quick little command.
That way, when your crap ISP monopoly drops your connection for no reason whatsoever, your remote command won't be SIGHUP'd, & you can resume with `screen -r` or `tmux attach` when they decide your connection can be restored.
This is, hands down, one of the worst ways to run Photoshop: in a Mac emulator on an old Sun machine.

You can now download 6000+ Lego instruction manuals from the Internet Archive, from the old sets you remember as a kid to the newer massive Star Wars models and sets for adults. https://kottke.org/23/07/instruction-manuals-for-6000-lego-sets-courtesy-of-the-internet-archive
@GFD holy geez, i can imagine how a power-user would get a lot out of that but it looks like you're strapping a stealth bomber to your hand π¨
"Very broadly speaking, the video game industry has supported the idea of game preservation. But when it comes to copyright reform, consistently weβve received pushback from the video game industry and its lobbying groups for even modest changes to copyright law to make it easier for libraries to do their jobs."
