i got a reply from blaagh on birdsite twitter.com/blaagh/status/1237 explaining what happened:

pkg-status.freebsd.org/builds/

[121amd64-quarterly-job-01] Extracting nspr-4.24: .......... done
===> firefox-74.0_1,1 depends on package: nspr>=4.25 - not found

Quarterly package build failed due to an out of date dependency :/

oops, upgrading dav1d to 0.6.0 broke firefox because libxul.so depends on libdav1d.so.3 & the upgrade removed it, installing libdav1d.so.4 instead. welp, good thing i didn't clear my pkg cache. `pkg install /var/cache/pkg/dav1d-0.5.2_1.txz` :/

thank you for the package locking feature, . i mean that sincerely. with firefox locked against removal, i can at least keep working until this is sorted.

did someone at mess up? why is this the only package search result for firefox now?

uh, , what are you doing? why do you want to delete my favorite web browser during a package upgrade?

a good operating system is one i forget is even there. this is what greeted me when i logged into my windows toy today: an invasive reminder that the os is there & that my own pc isn't mine.

(also, of course that key's going to be changed to something else.)

y'know how routers come with WPA2 security enabled and random word-word-number keys printed on a sticker? i just got one for a new customer in which the words are "zany" "onion," and my first thought was "that describes php perfectly."

us news, :battery_low:

"Hot Pockets heiress sentenced to five months in prison" is an actual headline in our reality.

we are living in the dystopia of 20 minutes into the future.

i just became a *real* isp help desk tech. i've been at this for 15 years, but today for the first time ever, one of my customers asked me about an email bounce message by printing it, scanning the printout sideways, putting the scan in a pdf, and emailing me the pdf. yes, the text of the scanned page was sideways in the pdf.

:crt_w_noise: make backups of your files

computers have come with smart-capable hard drives for most of 15 years now, & windows still doesn't have a smart monitor or notifier of its own.

has anyone made a "hell's bells" joke w/r/t doom and animal crossing yet

it's so obvious and stupid that i actually hope i'm not the first

:crt_w_noise: make backups of your files

Folks, I just had to tell a customer that they likely lost everything on their computer. They brought it to me saying one day it was working fine and the next it went black. I couldn't get their HDD to recognize at all in any of 3 testing environments.

Make backup copies of your files, and save them on removable disks. If you haven't done it in a while, do it today.

today's patient: "sfc /scannow" -> "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"

A quick look in services.msc showed half the services, nearly all of them microsoft services, disabled. (i guess they should be automatic? they're not well documented, & that seemed to work.)
