Philosophy time!
Here's why: THE MAN IS THE WATER BRAIN'S EYES. This argument is the equivalent of saying because eyes don't understand Chinese, neither does the brain of a Chinese speaker and thus the Chinese speaker must not have a mind. The man doesn't factor into whether the brain can think. He's just a source of stimuli for the water brain. Can the water brain think? I dunno. I'm tempted towards yes, since it's a complete replica of a brain, but I dunno.

I really wanna harp on one particular example of this: The water brain. Now, this isn't exactly indistinguishable from the original room, but, hey, Searle insisted on putting the man back into the system, so already we're at a bad start. But, here's the thing. Searle argues basically that since the man providing input to the brain doesn't understand chinese, the brain can't. THIS IS A LOAD OF UTTER RUBBISH.
Hot take
The Chinese Room argument against computer sentience doesn't sit well with me for many reasons, but first and foremost is the fact that Searle's reply to criticism seems to be "Ah, but if you look at [thing indistinguishable from his original room], you'll find the man doesn't speak Chinese, therefore I am very smart."

My take:
This wasn't a fuckup on the part of the U.S.
It was a successful, 20-year money laundering scheme.
Trillions of dollars' worth of Gen X's adulthood and Millennials' childhood were funneled out of American society, through Afghanistan
And into the pockets of defense contractors -- who are largely Republicans.
All those cushy, well-paying DC jobs in the past two decades -- these reports and videos are the price.
The Taliban aren't mystical superheroes who defeated the best armed forces on earth. They were the premise and the excuse for this multi-decade scam.
This wasn't a failure of the US military, either. Common soldiers were fooled and used.
And it's not Biden's fault -- or even Trump's really (though Trump made it worse because that's his shtick).
It's Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, Rove, and earlier Republicans who made this happen.

So, I've been reminded I might have BPD. Thankfully not violently so. Haven't had another episode of anything, but I do have a 2 page list of "Oh, yeah. All of this shit that I never talked with anyone about and assumed was fine now." Though, as it turns out, I might not be fine, much as I told my therapist and psychiatrist I was. Am I fine, or am I dissociating as usual and assuming that I'm fine afterwards? That I don't yet have a satisfactory answer to. Ugh. Mental health is hard.

weird idea: cooperative mode of a fighting game. instead of attempting to win, you're working with your opponent to make a flashy battle happen, and the game judges the two of you combined based on style and technique
this might encourage players to coach each other on techniques and stuff, especially if the kinds of things it judges you on are also applicable in versus matches
