It's a challenging endeavor trying to create a message that lasts so long. Symbols change, languages change or go extinct, and buildings/monuments can be interpreted as being important rather than a warning. Sandia National Laboratory's report on ideas for such a message was quite the eye opening read as to the monumental scale at which nuclear waste is an issue.

But, while it may be secure geologically, how do you stop people from inadvertently excavating the site? After all, the evidence of human activity that would be left behind would inherently invite archaeological activity, and who's to say someone wouldn't want to drill for oil there? That's the point of the 10,000 year message.

So, a little bit of context on the WIPP first. Nuclear waste is, obviously, bad. It remains bad for thousands and thousands of years. So, we need to do something with it. Right now, our best idea is to just bury it. That was the goal of the WIPP. It'd be a place to securely store nuclear waste for a long time.

So, sometimes, all it takes to change your mind is one little thing. Today, I found my one little thing on nuclear power. Don't get me wrong, I think fusion energy could still be useful if we ever get it working and I always saw fission power as being using alongside renewables, but now? I dunno...

Today, I learned about the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant and, more importantly, the 10,000 year message.

I was so excited to get to watch the first SLS launch too. This is a moment I've been waiting for since elementary school with the Constellation Program and Ares rockets. I was gutted when that was canceled. The Space Launch System may not have been the Constellation Program, but seeing it launch would at least make up for the disappointment I felt back then. Alas, today was not meant to be.

Nothing says “communist” more than depriving people of their livelihood and outlawing an industry where many people are their own boss, get unparalleledly large shares of the value they produce, and already own the means of producing said value.

If you think exploitation is an issue, then you should be strengthening the positions of sex worker-run sites and content creator sites like OF. If you think “pimps” are an issue, you should be supporting indendent, self-employed sex workers.

Onlyfans takes a 20% cut.

Do you know how much my boss takes? A 90% cut.

Sex workers keep telling you that independent sex work (aka the majority of sex work) is empowering, not exploitative. What's exploitative is capitalism and the way police, media & banks treat sex workers.

If your communism doesn't strive for a world in which nobody has to do sex work, but everyone can do sex work, you're on the wrong side. If your communism punishes sex workers, it's more aligned with cops, banks, and christofascists than with liberation.

And yes, depriving sex workers of the ability to work freely and safely IS punishing them. Nordic model or any other bullshit is violence.

“We don't want to hurt sex workers, we just want to take away their jobs, their income, their clients, their websites, their safety tools.”

And btw, that thing about “nobody should have to, everybody should be able to”? That goes for regular wage labour too.

If your communism means everyone will have to work, it's no better than capitalism.

And don't let me get into how attacking an industry that puts food on the table for a disproportionate amount of trans & black people speaks of underlying racism and transphobia, because if I do get into that, the MLMs will probably burn me at the stake.

Anyway, sex workers are my comrades more than any puritanian commufash could ever be.

If the only thing that separates your ideology from fascism is the planned economy, then you may as well be a fascist.

Incidentally, tangentially on the subject of blood donation, I should be taking a phlebotomy course next semester! I took the accuplacer last Friday and with the scores I got, I should probably be accepted. Phlebotomy isn't quite what I want to do, but I seem to only be able to handle a semester at a time due to burnout right now and the skills I'll learn will be applicable in both nursing and being a paramedic, whichever I eventually choose. So, yeah. Fun stuff

In particular, if you give blood regularly, keep your iron intake up, take a supplement if you need to, and don't be afraid to stretch out the distance between donations more than just the bare minimum. A 6+ month wait between donations is better than having you get all anemic.

I say this because I ended up going into the ER the other day with chest pain, palpitations, and shortness of breath only to find out my hemoglobin levels were well below where they should be, much less where they actually were before giving blood the week before. Anemia fucking sucks.

So, you may know I'm a big proponent of blood donation, and that's not changed, but I do need to make an important PSA on the subject: If you choose to become a regular donor, please be careful about your iron intake! More specifically, make sure you keep up your iron intake. Take a supplement if needed. Anemia can and will happen if you're not careful!
