After a blatantly racist work was nominated for four #EisnerAwards, it’s time to change how nominations for the comic book industry’s most prestigious awards are made. In an open letter to the Comic-Con International Board, Mariah McCourt and I are asking for greater transparency and changes to this process to reduce systemic bias in order to maintain awards’ prestige and relevance. Please read and sign on if you’re part of the #comics community and agree! jenniferdeguzman.com/blog/2023

Goodness - every page of
Julia Wertz’s Impossible People is an unflinchingly honest exploration of the human condition, painful, poignant & laugh out loud funny - and super smart cartooning. I kept trying to read it in short chunks and found it impossible to put down. 1/2

Artists criticize sponsoring of #Dimensions exhibition by Palantir in #Leipzig as "Artwashing". Over 300 already signed open letter: artwashing-leipzig.de/open-let

Palantir’s products recently experienced setbacks in the German courts. The software HessenData has come under criticism for its multiple police database pooling that also has people indirectly linked to a case – say, members of a sports club – automatically checked.

We are so happy to announce this memorial event to reclaim the space where the Institute of Sexual Sciences used to stand until May 6 1933. With this remembrance event exactly 90 years later we want to center Trans and Jewish perspectives and histories.

Saturday May 6, 12-17, Berlin Tiergarten near the Hirschfeld memorial

Two major takeaways for people on Substack like Jonathan Hickman, Molly Knox Ostertag or Michael Avon Oeming from the Decoder interview with CEO Chris Best:

1️⃣ Your platform does not consider it appropriate to moderate overt racism like “all brown people are animals”.

2️⃣ Your platform allows you to leave at any given moment and take all your subscriber information with you.

Draw your own conclusions.

Today I already smashed three paywalls with my favourite casual game:

1) Load a paywalled NYT article in the browser

2) Watch the progress bar grow until the text appears

3) Quickly cancel the loading before all pop-ups and restrictions can kick into gear

4) Too slow? Reload button = extra life

5) Cheat: Tor Browser's loading speed is your friend here :)

Happy Smashing! 💥⛏️

2011 I was in the middle of a weekly published correspondence with a Japanese , Matsuoka Waka, when the Daiichi nuclear disaster shocked the world.

Despite all the chaos, we decided to keep our exchange going. It was remarkable to watch Matsuoka-san’s cute manga characters pack their emergency backpacks to flee from radiation.

I am relieved beyond words that this weekend, the last German nuclear power plant went off the grid.

This I drew days after the catastrophe:
