I like morrowind a lot! it's great fun and once I worked it out (the game doesn't actually... teach you how to play) I realised it's very much my kind of game

I figured it out!

because I installed the nix version, I needed to create a custom patched version of the graphics libraries required

followed these instructions: https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/9415#issuecomment-139655485

and it worked (after I patched several other .so files as well)
