@thedaemon we should ban nfl because people should be out there playing football instead of watching it?
As much as I'm all in favour of blaming AI bros for the RAM shortage, there was always going to be a squeeze on RAM prices for some reason eventually, and we really did make sure it would be maximally painful for ourselves when we started treating RAM as functionally free.
RAM prices in 2026 are about the same as they were in 2008 when the original MacBook Air launched. It had 2GB of RAM and it ran like a goddamn dream. There is absolutely zero technical reason we couldn't ship an even better computer with 2GB RAM today — except everything these days is a JavaScript app running in a dedicated Chromium instance and needs at least its own gigabyte to run around in.
That said, it's probably pretty safe to blame AI bros for everything being a Chromium instance — I'm willing to bet it's largely the same people trying to ship something that just about works with the absolute minimum of time and effort now as it was then
@82mhz just a gentle reminder that my name is lowercase :) excellent write-up!

a while ago someone pointed out a page full of free VST instruments that emulate/simulate vintage synths, in a group chat i've since left
does anyone know a page like that? it was not the usual suspects like synth1, each vst was aimed at a specific synth, i believe at least one was roland
re: AI impacts
@arielmt i like the comparison to asbestos, it gets used everywhere and we'll be picking it off shit for years to come
@82mhz also re: "how efficient are these things" vs modern smartphones, beyond just ridiculous processor specs turning power into heat, mobile radios take a lot of power
try running your phone on airplane mode with WiFi and Bluetooth disabled and you'll see it lasts a lot longer
@82mhz my 4th gen with a battery replacement and similarly original 40gb hard drive sat on its last sliver of life for hours while i worked the other day
re: Linux rant
My only choices are extremely niche, which will be supported for who knows how many more days, and vintage distro versions with the certainty of no more updates.

Linux rant
"Got a dusty old laptop you wish you could use again? Don't want to throw it out? Just run Linux on it!"
This is total BS, now that every major Linux distro has abandoned its i386/i686/x86 32-bit editions. I can't even find one to put on my Atom Netbook anymore, let alone my early XP era Dell Inspiron tank.
Especially don't promise such BS with a stock photo of an obvious Commodore PET 4032 with the nameplate taped over to make it look like a generic old PC.
re: Linux rant
@arielmt and having tried those, the contemporary OS to older machines is almost always a better experience
