@selectric so when rendering it to a linear, finite playtime format, you have to make choices like how many times the song should play, how to fade it out if it's written for a loop, etc

@selectric i guess the major thing you lose with rendering them to MP3 is that a tracker song can not only loop but loop back to any point, like if you want an intro that only plays once and then the at the end the song goes back to the first verse after the intro (which is one reason it was a popular format for game music)

@selectric rockbox has a decent replayer for that that works on my ipod4g but i hate just about everything else about it. i wish i could just graft that onto the stock software

@selectric it's a bit like MIDI in that it's a series of note instructions except it also includes the sound samples rather than just "this channel is piano 2" information, so it needs a dedicated replayer but the files are a few kB rather than several MB for minutes of music

@selectric i really want a way to play tracker formats (MOD, XM, IT etc) on my iPod that doesn't involve me having to deal with everything else about rockbox

maybe i need to just suck it up and convert them all to mp3

little-known fact: the worst video game ever, E.T., was even more difficult to play on the HP LaserJet.

@arusha i've bought things from Germany before on eBay and shipping wasn't too expensive, so if you're willing to find a shipping estimate I'd at least like to know how much it would come to so i could make an offer :)

@arusha YES! I'm interested! I'm in the UK currently in possession of 3 chumbys and an active Blue Octy subscription, would love to add one to the fleet!

there should be a service cheaper than renting a vps where you can rent a static IP address and join a VPN with a server (or otherwise get traffic forwarded) so you can host things locally in your own connection for those with internet access that blocks hosting traffic or doesn't offer an IP that isn't CGNATted

@suricrasia like, yeah, entirely with you. if it wasn't for limitations of IP and greedy ISPs blocking traffic you wouldn't need to hunt for a cheap VPS or otherwise to host a website, you could just stuff an old PC in a closet. this is something that has been radiation background in my mind for ages and you brought it forwards

@suricrasia "you can have your own IP to host from but only if it's this new version almost nobody can connect to" is certainly a choice
