the problem with "social media as addiction" is that it has a second layer of addiction for people for whom the addiction isn't social media itself but the friends who are only accessible through the social media. if those people leave the social media they no longer have friends.

if you ask me "how do we fix mastodon/activitypub/the "fediverse"" my answer is "social media is a mistake from conception"
people get uppity about how mastodon's "DMs" are "unencrypted" and "can be seen by any admin" when
- no other social media did any different, this is just how it is in a decentralized version of that
- mastodon as a company (hello eugen) could do more to explain that this controls visibility only, which "direct/private message" from learned experience implies otherwise
- the whole fucking activitypub spec is a fucking mess anyway we're all just in for the ride
