i want to self-host an isolated recreational VoIP server people with internet access can log into with a VoIP phone or ATA and we can call each other. all guides for VoIP are overwhelming and expect you to want a trunk to real phone lines and i don't. is there a for dummies guide for something like this

@davidgerard Even if this isn't that, at *some* point we're going to see a quick "everyone panic! Keystone tool XYZ is compromised!" 13kloc fix that fixes … something … then deliberately adds three more well-obfuscated backdoors.

there should be a service cheaper than renting a vps where you can rent a static IP address and join a VPN with a server (or otherwise get traffic forwarded) so you can host things locally in your own connection for those with internet access that blocks hosting traffic or doesn't offer an IP that isn't CGNATted

network address translators were the beginning of the end of the internet. almost every cool decentralized technology would've been 1000% easier if we didn't have NATs on every residential connection to the internet.
do you think they'll have to cremate joanne rowling because of the amount of people who would vandalise her grave

"polymath" feels like one of those descriptors you would be too pretentions to give yourself rather than it being given to you

This seems like a good explainer of the issue.
