At the weekend, a group of trans women protested topless at the Scottish Parliament about the recent Supreme Court ruling that the Equality Act defines women as "biological women". The police couldn't arrest them, because to arrest them for showing their breasts would be to define them as women (it's not illegal for men to be topless). And, of course, the right-wing press that reported on it censored their breasts, thereby making their point for them.
that "Google made their search results worse on purpose to get more ad impressions" article that's going around is based on an internal email chain from a legal filing, in which an employee mentions this potential approach for increasing engagement metrics... as an example of a bad approach and not something they'd be comfortable doing.
based on my reading, there's nothing in here that says they actually did it. I can't see anything in there that supports that claim.
Today the FA has proven what most of us already knew: Football is an institutionally bigoted, tribalistic pastime and does nothing but foster hate & division.
There is a concept in psychology of "othering" - an "us and them" mentality that promotes and encourages discrimination. One of the first examples given of it in studies? Football.
Protest the FA's decision to ban trans players. If you don't you're as much a shitbag as they are. No discussion.
Incoming rant.
Stop using AI/LLM tools. Just stop. Especially if you're using them as a lark.
I'm going to be my most judgemental self here. If you post something that's generated by a LLM, (you know, ChatGPT, Gemini, etc) I will assume:
You don't give a shit about stealing from artists/writers.
You don't give a shit about the earth burning up.
You don't give a shit about clean, drinkable water.
You don't give a shit about people & their creative work.

Dear Canada
You are going to be given every excuse not to vote.
You'll be told there is already record turn out. You'll be told, the polls already favor the conservatives, losing. You will be told, that exit polls favor someone else. You may even be told, that it looks like someone else has won, before the election is over.
The same thing happen in the United States, and people felt confident, Donald Trump was going to lose. Do not make our mistake.
Finally got an adaptor for my smart bulb holder (since they only seem to come in Edison Screw and not Bayonet). Went that route so I can use whatever bulbs I like for when I can't get out of bed.
It works great except I can't pair it with Alexa since apparently I need to be running Android 12+ to do that... which is fucking stupid.
Pairs with Google Home just fine, so I guess I'll be saying "Okay Google" a lot instead of "Alexa".
Let's talk about xPal, which purports to be an encrypted messaging app. https://xpal.com
Anyone that reads my blog probably already knows where this is going.
If this post accidentally reaches escape velocity and people that don't know me find it: Hi, I'm a furry cryptography nerd. Usually when I talk about so-called private apps, it's to disclose vulnerabilities in them.
(Today, I just don't have the damn energy to do a formal write-up.)
Let's start with how they market their app.
Ah, Pope Francis croaked. Another high profile reactionary transphobe bites the dust.
Catholic popes aren't and can't ever be allies, short of dismantling the entire rotten structure.
So let's be clear, not only did Pope Francis consider trans people to be an affront to god and a rot in society, but he also held deep anti feminist views and believed women's value was in being subservient to men and not trying to hold the same level of authority as them. Not really someone I'm going to mourn. Sorry you fell for his repainted "hate the sin love the sinner" line about gay people
Watched a YT vid last night about the Windscale fire.
20 mins long, and though it was well produced and enjoyable to watch something was conspicuous by its absence; the changes that UK gov forced the plant to adopt, despite protests from technical staff, which made the reactor run well outside design spec.
That might not seem like much but the vid presents Windscale as an accident due to a "fatal design flaw" and not gov pressure.
@sodiboo when I was a librarian, we would often get requests from police to access records. This is legal, but they needed two things: 1) a warrant, and 2) a Section 48 form.
They would often come in without both of these and I would tell them that I can’t help them. They would always say shit like “Um, but it’s part of a police matter. It’s urgent”. And then I would say “well, the Libraries and Museums Act say that you need to come back with a warrant and a S48 form. If you don’t have them, I can’t help you.”
They would often try to pressure me and intimidate me, but I would stand my ground. Then they would always ask to speak to my manager, and she would say the same thing (but with a bit more diplomacy). The form exists so that we know that their request to access a patron’s sensitive information is legit. What library books you use, what you browse on the computers, etc is all sensitive information and giving that information out is no bueno.
The thing is that a S48 form is trivial to complete, but I have NEVER, in all seven years of working there, ever seen a cop come back with a completed form. It seems that just a little bit of bureaucracy is a good thing.

Wow... my benefits are short by £140 for the month.
Any help would be appreciated.
