I am running elasticsearch with 1G of ram. it is plenty for the toot-lab and the search doesn't feel laggy. I could probably drop it to 512M.

if cost is a concern, start with a lower amount of ram for elasticsearch - you might be surprised.

elasticsearch is designed for much weightier aggregations than masto is using, you'll not scratch its normal resource usage with under a thousand users based on my experience with elasticsearch in general and this code in particular.
