@squirrel ah, lightdm is the bit that does display managing, the greeter is the bit that pops up and actually asks you for the username and password

wallpapers are handled by the greeter, so if you changed that you might need to set the wallpaper

@squirrel didn't switch the greeter by any chance while doing the fprintd stuff?

Also, are you setting the wallpaper manually or automatically from your user wallpaper?

@squirrel damn, like 50% of the time on linux the problem is permissions

@squirrel permissions problem maybe?

The wallpaper has to be accessible to the lightdm user

@squirrel @revenant For Christmas day have the old javascript snow effects with tiny maples and let them drift downwards on computerfairi.es like snow!

@squirrel probably too much patience to be honest

For some reason I've still got it in my head that if I calmly explain to someone exactly why they are wrong they might finally get a clue despite all evidence to the contrary

@gcupc@glitch.social That is possibly the gayest thing I've ever seen

It's magnificent

@Vann@glitch.social Sorry, my fault, I posted a half-baked idea about what a more inclusive version of "hey dudes" might be and a bunch of "dude is gender neutral" people came out the woodwork

lewd?

I just got an e-mail wanting to sell me "Gold Rimming Salt"

Thank god it was for margaritas and not what my mind first went to

@masklayer certainly not as bad as it could be for a retirement poster with corn and guitars

As I've been reminded of the song "Do they know it's Christmas" (fucking constantly) here's a joke

What's the difference between Bob Geldof and God?

God doesn't walk down the street thinking he's Bob Geldof

Also Christmas in Ethiopia is in January

@Irick By the English speaking world in general

I'm claiming that the term in question has a widely accepted meaning and usage

You want to use it differently in your in-group? Fine, no worries, that's absolutely okay

Just don't complain when everyone else goes by the widely accepted definition and not whatever your in-group decided it meant instead

@Irick We're not suddenly deciding to gender this term

It's already gendered

It's always been gendered

@Irick None of that changes the fact that it is widely used, and widely accepted, as a male address term

That's the core issue here, individual women and enbys can decide that they'll use the term to refer to themselves, but that doesn't mean that all women and enbys have to be comfortable with the term being used that way

If you're posting a paper to back up an argument, maybe check to see that it agrees with your point first

'cause I will check shit like that

@Irick Well, for a start that's not what the data presented there indicates

It shows that it's used primarily, but not exclusively, as a male term in the groups surveyed

"'He' is the default pronoun in English, and when people write or say 'he' they usually mean 'he or she', so you shouldn't be offended when someone uses it to refer to you."

If you see the problem with that, you see the problem with "dude" as a unisex identifier.
