Sorry, I'm running Windows 10. Why does your app not like it? It'd be nice if I knew whether technically being on build 1607 was the reason, but here we are. You won't tell me. Thanks.

I'm currently banging my head against a wall trying to figure out why some programs crash on launching. I suspect it's that I'm running Windows Server 2016 (based on the really old Windows 10 build 1607), but I'd rather not switch to Tiny10 because that's what we in the business call "a massive pain in the ass". But I can't confirm or deny that that's the reason because everyone just says the minimum requirement is "Windows 10 or higher".

Falsehoods programmers believe about Windows 10:

We don't have to list builds in our minimum requirements because surely everyone is just on the latest build of Windows 10, right?

I am so fucking tired of everyone and their mother deciding that reinventing pure and simple HTML in fucking supercomputer-needing slow as script JavaShit is somehow the better future of the World Wide Web.

YOUR WEBSITE IS NOT THE ONLY APPLICATION I NEED TO RUN AT A SINGLE TIME! YOUR WEBSITE SHOULDN'T EVEN **BE** A FUCKING APPLICATION JUST TO SHOW SIMPLE TEXT, YOU TECHBRO-ADMIRING DUMBASSES!

I just got this old Macbook Pro running and what's the first thing I do? Install and play Bejeweled 2.

If you are horrified by the Web Environment Integrity proposal by Google (#DRM for ads), stop using Chrome and switch to Firefox and block ads everywhere.

The only eyeballs left for Google to show ads are the ones protected by ad blockers. That’s the highest growth opportunity they have, and we cannot let them have it.

Something keeps thumping against my window. I think the moth wants back in.

I was going to ask if any of y'all knew how to get a giant moth out of a house without killing it, but I got it. The moth landed on a thing I was holding and allowed me to carry it outside. It is free.

So, anyways, how's your evening going?

hot take: the scramble to "https everywhere" all the things on the web has been greatly exaggerated and it means that now my older devices that don't support TLS 1.2/1.3 can't even load most read-only pages that never needed it in the first place

So, here's a thought. The cars in Daytona USA are pretty boxy. Do you think they were trying to work off the gen 4 NASCAR cars and just ended up hitting hardware limitations, or do you think they ended up deciding to work off the gen 3 cars, since those were pretty boxy anyways? Like, I'm legitimately curious. The cars in game are much closer to, say, Rob Moroso's #20 oldsmobile from 1990 than to, say, Michael Waltrip's #20 pontiac from 1994, the year of the game's release.

You may have seen or heard the news about @dolphin / Valve / Nintendo from a few hours ago. If not, read e.g. pcgamer.com/nintendo-sends-val from the amazing @wes.

Unfortunately pretty much everyone has been getting the legal details wrong, incl. Dolphin themselves on their blog (now fixed).

Quick thread with my personal summary of the situation.

i did a funny

allegedly nintendo only DMCA'd dolphin from steam due to it's inclusion of the wii common key

so here's a flag that represents the wii's common key, in hexadecimal form :)

Re: No context

You know, actually, if you were to come up with the ability to go back in time, you could really have some fun by going back in time, killing, say, Andrew Jackson, then going forward well past any human lifetime and getting yourself thrown in jail for assassinating a president over 100 years prior. (Well, I say "fun". You'd be stuck in jail for assassinating a president. But it would make a fun story in a history book.)
