obituary (-/~)

I got to know Jutta during my intern years at the publishing company around the turn of the millenium. She had just translated and published Debbie Drechsler‘s “Daddy‘s Girl”, and as much as I appreciated her work, I can only share her overt enthusiasm in hindsight when imagining what an utter oddity this must have been for the cis-bro fanboy comics scene of the nineties: a woman publishing the account of a female survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

obituary (-/~)

Just came home from a mourning ceremony for Jutta Harms, who died shortly before Christmas.

people know her well, though most of you may not. At least in Germany, the recent, growing acceptance of comics as an art form as well as as a platform for feminist discourse is unthinkable without Jutta laying the groundwork since the early 90‘s, tirelessly translating, curating, shepherding artists and connecting the dots of local comic scenes dispersed all over Europe.

On December 31, 1995, Bill Watterson published the final 'Calvin & Hobbes' comic strip. For most of us, it was like watching our absolute best friend ever move to another continent! The hole in our hearts is still felt even now! t.co/i2ygP9RRPx

ukpol meets The Incredible Hulk

Yesterday, unelected PM Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson likened Britain to the Hulk, bound in EU shackles.

“Hulk always escaped, no matter how tightly bound in he seemed to be - and that is the case for this country. The madder Hulk gets, the stronger Hulk gets”

(Further reading:
“Planet Hulk”, where Hulk gets launched into space because he is deemed too dangerous to stay on Earth at all, and its followup storyline, “World War Hulk”.)

#Icelandic has some useful words which English lacks.

(Of course, this will be true of any pair of languages - English and #Icelandic are simply the ones I use the most and know best.)

My favourite such word tends to be "sólarhringur": a sun-circle, the 24 period of one day and one night.

But...

Lately I've been really missing a good translation for "spennufall": literally a "tension drop." It's used to name the deflated feeling you get when you've been stressed or under pressure... and suddenly it's over, whatever it was.

Inexplicably sad after winning a contest? Spennufall.

Feeling empty after passing a difficult exam? Spennufall.

Unable to enjoy your new found freedom after meeting a deadline? Spennufall.

Pretty much any time you should be celebrating but just want to climb into bed and sleep instead, that's probably #spennufall.

It's a very useful word!

Brave is showing up in my newsfeeds again, so

Periodic reminder that Brendan Eich, the CEO of Brave Software, is a homophobe who donates to anti-LGBT organizations.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't use the browser. But you should probably be wary of any monetization attempts, since we know where that money will go.

@tethre@cybre.space It sure does!

Ooh I'm such a nerd, I really love it when there's a narrative element to something very technical.

Like quoting Hans Christian Andersen's „Snow Queen“ by naming the custom ROM for Kai OS-based phones “Gerda OS”!

Quote from the website:
“Our mission is to liberate the heart of Kai.”

Genius, down to its snowflake logo.❄️

3.) And last but not least, you can always go to a @cryptoparty@mastodon.earth near you, bring a phone and will probably find someone who will help you flash it with an open OS like /e/ or for free.

You can find those e.g. in London @CryptoPartyLDN, Berlin @cryptoparty_berlin or Toulouse @Cryptoparty@mastodon.tetaneutral.net – just have a look at cryptoparty.in/parties/upcomin for upcoming events.

P.S.

If you feel like you'll never have the time or skills to flash a phone but crave an alternate, Google-free phone, you have the following three options (I'm aware of) atm:

1.) Sailfish OS: apart from the odd already flashed device on Ebay et al, you can go to the shop at jolla-devices.com and see what's in stock (not too much atm, but Xperia 10 is on the horizon and will be available through this page);

Well, it's done – I flashed my first phone!

Had some ups and downs, but these things always have.

(The Jolla documentation is actually pretty good and complements Sony's where it gets fuzzy.)

Bottom line: if I can do it, _you_ can do it!
