maths + toots = ???

mastodon appears to count characters as "a unicode character", so 'a' is a character, and so is '임' (rather than twitter, which counts Korean and Chinese characters as being multiple characters, for some reason).

So we can fill up each of our characters with any existing unicode code point.since there are 1,112,064 code points in UTF-8, we can have 10283.4218946 bits of information in one toot.

BUT!

we can do better...

(thanks to @popefucker@cybre.space for sending the maths)

What is the highest amount of data you can store in a toot?

(We'll assume that we're not attaching a file, because that makes things more complex.)

Let's start with a basic idea: we're going to fill each character of a toot with either a 0 or a 1.

Then we have 500 binary digits, or 500 bits of information.

But we can do better: let's use base-10.

With base-10, we can fill up each char with one of 0-9, which means we have ~1660.96 bits of information.

@lucidiot@tiny.tilde.website darn, I guess I can't use the tilde anymore

Classic Doctor Who | Season 9

@DialMforMara I'm probably going to write some of my own fanfiction soon, tbh!

re: Classic Doctor Who | Season 9

@Azure Season 6B is a theory that I like (because it means there's time to have stories with the 2nd doctor that have companions that weren't in the show), but it feels like a workaround that we shouldn't really need to have...

re: Classic Doctor Who | Season 9

@Azure there weren't any gaps in the first or second doctor stories!

They almost always lead directly into each other.

But yeah, the modern show really doesn't leave much room either...

Classic Doctor Who | Season 9

I'm really enjoying that the stories have gaps between them now.

They've moved away from what the early episodes did ("We have to show every moment!"), and are letting there be spaces of time that aren't shown, where the Doctor and companions could be doing all sorts of things

Classic Doctor Who | The way I'm thinking about things

By default, every story gets a "Maybe" recommendation.

If it's not very good at all, then I downgrade it to "Don't watch".

If it exceeds my expectations, then it gets upgraded to "Watch".

If it exceeds my expectations AND the answer to the question "If I only watch one story from this season, should I watch this one?" is yes, then it gets upgraded to "Highly Recommended"

The Curse of Peladon is really, really good.

Except the first episode is a bit too slow, so I can't give it a Highly Recommended rating.

I also am really glad the Master isn't here...

heck, I didn't realise it had been 8 days since I last watched any Doctor Who.

But today I'm watching The Curse of Peladon. This is the first story since Claws of Axos that I remember watching as a child.

I'm enjoying it!
