RT @gendercensus@twitter.com The fifth annual international Gender Census is now open until 1st March 2018!

smartsurvey.co.uk/s/gendercens

It's for anyone whose genders (or lack thereof) aren't described by the M/F binary. It's short and easy, and the results are useful in academia, business, and self-advocacy.

First of all I found something that will upgrade my PC into the past millennium. I do love the box though.

Why does it have a joystick port? Is this something sound cards did back then?

@LottieVixen@dev.glitch.social *snuggles*

@Terxbor it's a secret for now - I want to get a working prototype first before I actually tell everyone what I'm trying to do - I don't want to dissapoint anyone if I can't even get the basics set up

annoyance at computer stuff

it took me nearly an hour to
* set up haskell to work in arch
* set up mercurial to work with github

both of these things, when I set them up on different OSes, took only a couple of commands and then waiting for stuff to download

but here? I had to mess around with so many config files and package managers and it's such a mess and I'm upset

ok OCaml isn't multicore and that's daft

and parallelism in haskell is way easier so I guess I'll do this in haskell.

my main concern is that haskell isn't suitable for low latency applications? but we'll find out, I guess

@cq I love haskell!!!!

but... I've used it for every project I've done in the past 2.5 years...

decision zone™

trying to decide whether I do this project in OCaml or haskell

pros of OCaml
* practical usage of a language I'm learning
* it seems very suited to the project
* it's a cool language that deserves more projects

cons of OCaml
* it hasn't got some of the nice features of haskell (really good interactive mode, typeclasses, seperation of side effects)
* setting up the toolchain took me a while, which is a barrier to entry if anyone ends up wanting to help with this project
