My first suggestion is to try out other games in general! D&D is really complex which makes it seem like it would be a lot of effort to learn another one, but that's often not the case.

Dungeon World is a good choice — it's D&D, but it's more flexible and less complex.

If you want something different, here are some favourites of mine:

controversial opinion about popular Tabletop RPG

Thinking again about how much I dislike D&D

Not because it's a bad game, but because I think a lot of people who would othwerwise absolutely love Story Games are introduced to D&D first, and are put off by the fact that it gets in the way of telling stories more than it helps

in fact it was so good that in May of 2013 a sequel comic with one of the original screenwriters on board was born...

...which then stopped updating in April of 2015

I can never quite recall if the first Doctor Who story I saw was a first doctor story or a third doctor one, but in any case: Jon Pertwee's Doctor is one of my favourites.
