what's a good Linux desktop/window manager/environment for a low resolution landscape touch screen

lxde randomly makes things (like the shutdown panel) have 0.5pt text and still not fit the screen because it's vertical

Golfshrine followers: I have an RSS feed now!

netizen.club/~wildweasel/rss.x

This is 100% hand-written, but validates more or less fine and appears to work correctly in Feeder, so I think it's ready for prime time. Follow my journey to collect the unending torrent of cheap old virtual golf in your RSS reader of choice!

oh i also have a tiny mono audio amp coming and i plan to use the tiny little speaker that comes with the nc100

currently everything is double-sided taped down, the internal USB stuff (keyboard, screen) has been soldered straight onto the removed headers to make clearances work, i have a flat cable breakout for hdmi to make that fit in

the ports at the back will be located with a 3D printed plate i need to design yet

i'm still not sure how the screen will attach because id like it to sit at an angle, need to think about a way to hold it in place

Show thread

so these are the internals otherwise so far

  • RPi 3B 1GB
  • DietPi (might change my mind later)
  • RPi Pico running a very quick slapdash circuitpython script to turn the unharmed NC100 keyboard into USB HID (charmed by how easy that was)
  • a new dfrobot UPS HAT has been ordered, should give me I2C monitoring so i can get that into the OS
  • 10000mAh battery (might been a mistake given clearances but i'm winging this
  • screen is 1280x480, takes HDMI and USB for power and touch

@gilesgoat @llamasoft_ox during a period working for a fintech writing software for point-of-sale card machines, one of my coworkers actually previously had worked writing software for virtual slot machines

yep it's gotten here this morning and in less than a day i killed it

never assume that just because the connector is the same the polarity is.. i've now repinned the battery but not before probably killing this UPS HAT

which specifically has no diode protection

Hey, just found your site using theforest.link. You seem pretty chill, and I hope life is treating you well. You been watch… — i got really into patlabor recently retrospring.net/@maple_syrup/a

So, would y'all believe I only just now noticed the Cohost financial implosion news? Day jobs are fun sometimes. Anyway, I'm still paying comfortably out of pocket for this instance in the Mastodon network, and it'll stay that way until I finally get off my rear and put out a tip jar or two for all you good fairy folks.

and oh yeah the screen is capacitive touch so mouse input is sorted too

Show thread

i need to make permanent fittings for everything and get much thinner and shorter cables to plug everything together without spaghetti spilling out of every orifice, and then figure out a power solution (i'd like something that the pi can battery monitor on, which seems like nobody has ever done, everybody just plugs a powerbank and prays) but the main concept is solid
