@mrfry i'm not trying to argue in bad faith here i'm just saying that making a web browser in 2024 is far from a trivial task with what monstrosity the web has become and the people hoping that mozilla gets crushed as a byproduct of the google antitrust case are only wishing for things to get worse

@mrfry so you think that a ragtag group of people can fork a browser made by a much larger entity and never ever need to pull from upstream ever again? with the ever changing standards of the web (thanks Google)?

and Vivaldi is a chromium fork

@mrfry you do realise that to fork firefox there needs to be a firefox, right?

how's that OS/browser from scratch project going anyway, is the lead still claiming to be "apolitical" while shaming minorities out of contributing and pointing out bad actors in it?

maybe i just leave the web and use only irc and telnet bbses as my only means of internet so i don't have to deal with any of this

"mozilla bad because LLMs".... okay..... but what's the alternative that isn't built on top of chromium or firefox then

if mozilla goes in the google antitrust case do you think someone else who won't use LLMs will continue to develop firefox?

like i just want to understand what's the long term goal here because every time i tried to go back to windows 98 and not deal with modern software the same kids crying about this told me i shouldn't be putting it online because it's unsafe

The Pier
You are standing at the beach next to the pier. Up in the sky the clouds are peacefully jagged and scattered. The sand beneath your feet is satisfyingly crunchy with big square grains. You smell the low-resolution fish and chips being fried from an open window above. You are unlikely to be eaten by a grue.

@sam i did it with an nginx rule!

map $http_user_agent $brnotice {
default '</head>';
~*Chrom '<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://maple.pet/notice.css"></head><div class="impnotice">You are using an unsupported browser. Please visit <a href="https://getfirefox.com">this website</a> if you would like to upgrade to a supported browser.</div>';
}

and in the server block:

        sub_filter '</head>' $brnotice;
sub_filter_once on;

if you like something someone made for the love of god tell them AND CLICKING THE LIKE STAR IS NOT TELLING THEM

combined likes and reblogs across all 3 release posts: 77, mostly from strangers

combined replies/mentions directed at me i can easily find: about 6 or 7? mostly from mutuals.

creating things online is a lonely job

if you like the things i built and you don't want to tell me or buy me a ko-fi about it then at the very least please stop using chrome

Show thread

maybe i shouldn't have caved, i absolutely think Chrome and Google will destroy whatever's left of the web as we know it, but i have a trauma response to bothering people

Show thread

someone loudly complained about the notice i put on my website (which includes pages such as and ) that Chrome is an unsupported browser. i don't want to not have the notice as i find it important for people to know i will not offer support if they have issues while using Chrome, but i caved and make it look less ominous.

happy new year! 🎉🥂

@jk @hazel i would love to build/see the tube camera version of this be built btw

@jk @hazel looks like the youtube video that was the source for this got taken down some time ago but i remember seeing around 2011 someone who built a game boy camcorder by slapping a TV tuner to a GBA and a portable PVR, so the idea is there

coming soon to : luminosity-based palette retargeting

(or, in adobe parlance, gradient map)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
