@maple @TheHottestPotato tbh, i think that this is good advice
i'll just be over here pretending to know as little as possible the next time she asks me a question, lol
@TheHottestPotato i think that this is pretty true, especially when it comes to things like this
the astonishing part of the whole thing is that she's convinced that i know nothing about programming. it's amazing.
i even showed her a project that i did, and she was like, "ok" and then continued the strangeness
i... can't... even........
tried to help a cis-in-law with coding homework. this. was. a. mistake.
i told her you can change variables after you make them. she didn't believe me. "what's the point of a variable if you can change it after you create it!? shouldn't it mean something?"
i was like, "it's.... variable......."
she ended up going to some random guy for help and he gave her an answer that is not going to pass the homework assignment but... and he told her that variables never change
someone. please.. help me.
@lynnesbian i feel like it is a required part of the mastodon experience tbh
@scarly we've all been there
@maple woooo! this is excellent! 👍
@Zelli @maple @evie @LaserScheme i feel like i just walked into something so amazing tbh
I was once told a story about some kid that worried too much so his nan gave him some worry dolls (little dolls that you tell your worries to) but then he got worried that his worry dolls were too worried about his problems so he made smaller worry dolls for the worry dolls and honestly mastodon, I think we can all relate to this story...
@maple i know this feel, batteries for old electronics are a glorious thing
\o/
@scarly how do I pin someone else's post
if you want to know...
@Guinevere@girlcock.club ultimately, as long as things stay fragmented then they'll be safe from corporate dominance bc no one instance will have all that much power
also, getting mastodon compatible alternatives is good. im working on one now actually, and it aims to try to push some of the limits on what the activitypub spec can do
if you want to know...
@Guinevere@girlcock.club thankfully, the fediverse is super fragmented right now. i actually created a spreadsheet using the data on fediverse.network bc i wanted to look at exactly this. mastodon.social and the other larger instances combined still don't quite hit 50% of the current mastodon instance network.
pleroma is the next active, but actually a lot of its activity is concentrated in some of those alt right instances that we all mute
if you want to know...
@Guinevere@girlcock.club agreed. as an alternative to this, however, there are also some protocols for easy account migration between disparate systems.
adopting one of those would be a bit more transparent than a chain and just as effective, because you would retain all of your data in a way that makes sense
downside? this would require coordination between the activitypub serve developers.
and, i have noticed that mastodon is dominant enough that it tends to dictate these things
