It's not that he's openly gay - Holt makes no secret about being gay. It's the ostentation. You KNOW Holt thinks the rainbow flag is grossly overdoing it. "Why do we need all these colors to represent ourselves? We should pick ONE. Blue. I pick blue. Actually, I prefer a seventy-percent gray, but that won't show up well in photographs. So I pick blue."
He's been complaining privately about the flag for years. But he's still got one in his cup, because he's proud of who he is.
