@alice@elekk.xyz i think i prefer @maple

the messy part is how mastodon as a protocol does not have any way of handling accounts moving (the user way is to create a new account, since i have database access i could actually change my account but that'll break federation a lot)

kinda want to move my account to @maple but we all know that'll be a mess...

also: if you added me and i seem to not have accepted, i think the add requests don't show up unless i sign out and back in

so ping me if that's the case

@XenonFiber@octodon.social same!!!

i was never not serious about using the escargot server

too bad nobody else is using it rn

@XenonFiber@octodon.social xenon it's such a mess not even the creators know what happens at maple™

@djsundog @vfrmedia could be nice if you did the same thing someone did with that 90s police car computer and just replace the entire guts of it with an sbc which drives the crt itself

i dont wanna join tilde town anyway cause someone already has ~maple and i dont wanna use another username so

so much for that i guess.

@troubleMoney i super would love to run a bbs but from prior experience it's hard to get people to use it for more than one day and it's very hard to maintain and administer and i do not want to do it again

computer fairies used to be a bbs in 2013-2014 already and was even in the synchronet vertrauen list of bbses

hot community take, maybe subtoot

by all means i'm not saying you're not allowed to have fun with software, go heck the world up with your weird little gadgets made for your and your friends

but please don't try to pass it off as a community open to everyone, it really isn't

hot community take, maybe subtoot

this is probably a heavy and vague subtoot but, having tried to participate in communities where certain users get special perks that are hardwired into the software you're using

like yeah i guess it's fun for you and your friends

but that's not how you make an open community

you're making a closed circle of people in on the joke

and when and outsider looks in and sees all that, they'll just be confused, perplexed and frustrated

Show thread

@troubleMoney no that's what i mean yeah

setting up your server to be like that

it's not easy

hot community take

exclusivity is not a good way to make a community

that means for example a board software that has special cases for certain users to have things unattainable for others

if you want to foster a good community you need a level playing field for everyone to have the same set of features (when those features are for the most part, cosmetic) as everyone else

exclusivity encourages cults of personality

@troubleMoney access level privileges are very much not easy to set up at all
