@HerraBRE @purism@librem.one i mean, if i thought they were going to do an actual good job of moderating, it would be a lot less of a problem
however they've removed all guidelines of what is abusive, said they'll only pump the breaks on stuff that's actually law-breaking, and this is on top of other behavior - like wanting to remove the report feature entirely, their chat client having google analytics in it for awhile (and, to me, crucially, NOT TELLING CUSTOMERS), etc - idk if they can be trusted.
kind of like, y'know, jogging. i have no interest in jogging and so on but it's always lovely to see a neighbor out and about doing his regular jog.
community! or... something!
the fedi timeline is feeling less like a bunch of strangers and more like people i've seen around. just kinda how you're like "oh yeah, there's somebody who goes to walk his yorkie in the afternoons, i know him."
things like... oh hey, there's the solarpunk person whose pronouns idk yet with truly magnificent hair. oh hey, there's the fella with the clown fighting game. do i like clown fighting games? well no, but i support his follow-through of artistic vision dangit! and it's good to see.
anyway it's taken months but i do feel like i'm settling into mastodon a bit.
i definitely miss my community friend-group on tumblr, a lot. i might pop my head in and see if there are any discords to scoop me up in. it's natural; most of those people i've known for... jesus, 8 years at least, maybe 10. we all landed on tumblr after being ousted from fucking foopets lmfao.
but it's nice to like... know the neighborhood a little more, and feel comfortable in it.
@InspectorCaracal @oct2pus @brainblasted it's all bad and everything's awful and i'm ordering a goddamn dessert but i'll ask 'em to bring two extra spoons. whose round is it to buy again
@InspectorCaracal @oct2pus @brainblasted also a distinct lack of understanding of *why this old way is the old way* - which makes me want to tear out my hair and scream on the floor in an entirely different way. the market forces shifted for reasons away from that oldschool style, and for reasons they should probably want to, like, know about, instead of just going "what do you mean there's not the same market for bespoke horsewhips there was now than there was in 1809"
Purism stuff
@Shrigglepuss if they have a customer service number or email, i would try there first
then you can also explain "i am cancelling because x", which might be valuable. (probably only via email though, if they are outsourcing who is the customer service phone mook.)
@InspectorCaracal it seems like purism has no idea how PEOPLE works, and does not care
like... listen, even if i were being a pure capitalist asshole, you know what ISN'T a compelling strategy for making new sales in the forms of additional sign-up accounts, and especially RETAINING those accounts for more $$ over time?
"come on down to our toxic shithole! you'll have a really bad time!"
@oct2pus what makes it maddening is that i think we're at a tipping point where consumers are more and more aware that legality =/= morality, AND that consumers are wanting to no longer accept "we do as required by law and no more". it's why mastodon exists! heck, it's why purism exists, and that's the market they're trying to get money from!
it's bonkers. why would you say you weren't part of a bubble while also banking on that bubble continuing so you can profit?? 6_9
(i mean, idk if their encryption works like that. i'm a bio/english major ok? i took one semester of java for non cs majors for my math requirement. but i'm just sayin', if a company like purism sells stuff with "you're safe with us, pinky promise we swear!" and then pulls these boneheaded stunts that show their definition of "ethics" is bass-ackwards, i would not trust that pinky promise very much.)
honestly reading the ad copy, it feels like the market for these services are "people who know just enough that privacy is good, but not more." they're aiming to be the America Online of internet privacy, all made easy.
...but declaring you're letting bigotry happen because you get money for it is not good ethics.
with that obvious, i don't think any of their other claims - not accessing data, etc. - can really be trusted.
so - it's a dangerous product, and warnings should go out accordingly.
honestly, with @brainblasted talking to the admins and the admins making it clear their stance is pro-bigotry in the "well mneh mneh we just luv freeze peach too much so we can't do anything to stooop that" way, i'd urge everyone to be really vocal that #purism / #libremone are now selling dangerous products
the some products might even be good! but paying for the security of a gated community means nothing when the guard knows your roommate's a serial killer, and does nothing about it.
