After a weekend of coding, pixel art, and other stuff, I've got a lot of the framework for entities implemented. A lot of it was just rewriting code from the previous game to be 16-bit.
Some unseen stuff going on is that that burger is actually detecting the right tiles and palette to use automatically. Still unsure if I'll be dynamically loading those mid-level but I could later if I want to.
@behold3r it's true; I do it sometimes
@softgoat I really love the early furry style and for awhile I wanted to learn how to do that myself so I could make more of it. At least Sabrina Online is still getting comics.
Just reminded of how strangely validating it was to have Nova appear in Super Homebrew War alongside other NES homebrew characters.
I want to do some deliberate, actual crossovers later on, probably after Nova the Squirrel 2, in which I want to really develop things out more rather than relying on cameos. Definitely have Maffi as a major character in the story.
@Austin_Dern I'll try to track down those artists and see if their art style is cute enough for me. Unfortunately, a lot of the people who are known for drawing the kind of stuff I want don't have very cute art, and it's not easy to tell who'd be willing to if they haven't yet. I guess it doesn't hurt to ask though.
Or I guess if nothing else I could go poke Kloe again.
I've been thinking about the Nova+Isabelle picture I tried to commission in January again, that never got past a sketch. I need to find a different artist who can do it, but at the same time looking around for different artists to find a suitable one is a pretty bad experience. Maybe I'll do it anyway though.
@maple When I set up a Windows 98 VM it was specifically to try those Sim games again, including Tower, even though I'm terrible at them all
@XerTheSquirrel probably the best answer is to look for even better ways to show off affinity for Isabelle or Gadget, like https://www.etsy.com/listing/218259198/new-isabelle-poster-inspired-by-the though I might like to have that sort of thing in *my* room!
@maple @DarkWitchClaire I'd personally recommend learning 6502 assembly even if you decide to make most of it in C, so you can drop down into it for things cc65 does a bad job at. https://skilldrick.github.io/easy6502/ is a great tutorial.
It's actually a really pleasant processor to program for and I enjoy it a lot. It's very simple and elegant.
@shaderphantom A long while ago people were writing a new tool to insert custom block types into Super Mario World (to replace an older tool for the same purpose) but were stuck on picking a name for it.
And one name floating around was CBT, for Custom Block Tool. It did not get chosen.
There are a lot of things that require a lot of time investment on a regular basis to really be worth it or effective, so a lot of things feel kind of out-of-reach next to a full-time job. I guess I can see the perspective of people who want to do indie game development full-time, since then you could do that without it being at the expense of something else.
@maple at the very start of college I thought I was going to be playing my 3DS on the bus to/from college a lot since the trip took like an hour, but in reality I really just ended up chatting on my phone.
When I get my 3DS in working order I could play with you!
My player/level collision is a lot more robust now after fixing several small things, especially the way I push the player out of the block they're detected to be in. Now part of the process for that involves completely canceling out whatever horizontal movement they had that frame, so they're guaranteed to be out of it.
