My knee jerk anti capitalist reaction is to just blame Amazon and Starbucks but the unfortunate reality is that Seattle let corporations like them thrive in the first place, so it clearly runs deeper than that. If Amazon actually left there wouldn't be anything stopping another predatory startup from taking its place. :/

It's also given me more cause to start questioning my own surroundings, since Madison is increasingly earning a reputation as "the Seattle of the Midwest" and it definitely has its less pleasant side to begin with.
