quote from a video about Object Oriented Programming (OOP)
as @falkreon pointed out, there are some issues with this video. But I do love how it clearly states the practical problems with OO without getting deeper into programming language theory.
quote from a video about Object Oriented Programming (OOP)
I don't think imperative programming is the answer, however I'd much rather work in an imperative language with modules and polymorphism than an OO language
I also thought it was weird to say that functional programming has performance issues - that seems like an unneccesary disclaimer that repeats outdated notions.
I like this video primarily because it demonstrates the problems with OO.
@typhlosion oh cool!
@loki goodnight, loki~
quote from a video about Object Oriented Programming (OOP)
"When I look at your OO codebase, what I'm going to encounter is either this over-engineered giant tower of abstractions, or I'm going to be looking at this inconsistently architected pile of objects that are probably all tangled together like christmas lights"
@Lex_Lee I hope you do too...
@catoutofbed@octodon.social @Kat half life 2's glitch is this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8lNwh00UnA
it was controversial because:
1) it involves manipulating files with the game menu
2) it's equivalent to just starting a new game from the current level with the console
@catoutofbed@octodon.social @Kat both half life 1 and half life 2 have a save warping glitch, but it works completely differently.
half life 2 CAN ALSO do half life 1's glitch, but it requires flooding the game with inputs, which is impossible to do in real time, and is slightly less useful due to the larger size of hl2's maps.
@catoutofbed@octodon.social @Kat wait
that's a different save warping thing that I hadn't heard of
@catoutofbed@octodon.social @Kat save warping was discovered in 2016 ish, but it was controversial and not used in speedruns for almost a year
The Gravity Gun run doesn't use it

quote from a video about Object Oriented Programming (OOP)
"This lead us to patterns, and then the SOLID principles, and test-driven development and agile, all this stuff which has subsequently been piled on by people who insist that this is now the One True Way to do OOP.
But to me, all these represent bandaids – they are compensation for the fact that the original vision of OOP has never panned out, and every few years there's a new ideology in town about how we do OOP for reals this time"
@troubleMoney @EffectBot @maple that looks amazing
@NicoleTheLizard oh gosh...
In case you're unfamiliar, I make a gothic horror/queer romance comic called Obelisk! It's currently on hiatus, set to return September 5th! http://obeliskcomic.com
Set in 1908 New York, Obelisk follows Evelyn Reuter as she digs into her late father's secrets and comes up with more questions than answers. They lead her to Margot - an eccentric curio shop owner who seems to have secrets of her own.
