@gerd after poking around, I think I've figured out why:

There's a lot of copy pasted code between the nest and pijul, and they want to take all the common functionality out and put it in a library (that both programs then import).

I suspect they'd be willing to open source the nest *once* they've done that.

@Anarkat in theory yes, but the simplest of these programs has around 30 keybindings, and the most complex has over a thousand.

It would take a very long time, it would mean that if I look up a keybinding in a manual I'd have to translate it, and then after all that I'd have to figure out if I *actually* prefer the dvorak keyboard long term

I think the only reason I haven't switched to Dvorak is that my text/document editor and browser use vim key bindings, so I'd have to relearn all of that, fighting against my muscle memory...
