i mean like. come the fuck on. if you're abandoning morality for money, at least actually do it in the way that gets you money, not the ways that are just going to be doomed i mean jfc it's so stupid my head hurts

@oct2pus what makes it maddening is that i think we're at a tipping point where consumers are more and more aware that legality =/= morality, AND that consumers are wanting to no longer accept "we do as required by law and no more". it's why mastodon exists! heck, it's why purism exists, and that's the market they're trying to get money from!

it's bonkers. why would you say you weren't part of a bubble while also banking on that bubble continuing so you can profit?? 6_9

(i mean, idk if their encryption works like that. i'm a bio/english major ok? i took one semester of java for non cs majors for my math requirement. but i'm just sayin', if a company like purism sells stuff with "you're safe with us, pinky promise we swear!" and then pulls these boneheaded stunts that show their definition of "ethics" is bass-ackwards, i would not trust that pinky promise very much.)

honestly reading the ad copy, it feels like the market for these services are "people who know just enough that privacy is good, but not more." they're aiming to be the America Online of internet privacy, all made easy.

...but declaring you're letting bigotry happen because you get money for it is not good ethics.

with that obvious, i don't think any of their other claims - not accessing data, etc. - can really be trusted.

so - it's a dangerous product, and warnings should go out accordingly.

Show thread

honestly, with @brainblasted talking to the admins and the admins making it clear their stance is pro-bigotry in the "well mneh mneh we just luv freeze peach too much so we can't do anything to stooop that" way, i'd urge everyone to be really vocal that / are now selling dangerous products

the some products might even be good! but paying for the security of a gated community means nothing when the guard knows your roommate's a serial killer, and does nothing about it.

Purism will allow bigoted content on their servers

@brainblasted hahaha oh wow i thought the neat exclusion of their CoC was bad and it's worse holy SHIT.

this is not particularly funny mind you i'm just at the stage where you have to laugh at the utter fucking absurdity of this being ~*eThIcS oNLiNe*~. fucking amazing

Purism will allow bigoted content on their servers

Purism has decided that they will explicitly allow bigoted content on their servers. For that reason I will not lift my ban on them, and I recommend that servers that have not blocked them yet do. I cannot in good conscious support their products if they will allow the spread of content that harms minorities.

Below is the conversation I had in their public Librem One room after they published their CoC.

@chartier @sydneyfalk don't worry, i'm thinking the silicon valley salesman moving on to the benefits of raw water will probably a least make them slow down a bit

as they're in the toilet with beaver fever, but, y'know, i'll take what i can get

@chartier @sydneyfalk i mean i think that's the definition of a good 99% of silicon valley.

"i never needed x, so nobody will need x. let's innovate past it! :) "

at some point the absolute dearth of empathy for other people, listening to other people, considering other viewpoints, or even just thinking logically about why things exist, all melds together into a wonderful ball of shit so rank even dungbeetles refuse to move it, and we are all made worse for existing in the world that it does

@sydneyfalk y e p.

whether they're shitters themselves, or just willing to look the other way if they get their money at the end of the day, i don't know. and i don't know if it even matters.

and this is the company that's selling all their other products on "ethics!" because "we promise, we won't ever access your account or do evil things... we're ethical! ethics! :) please give us money for being good good ethics boys."

lmao yea cool they're gonna sell shit in a heartbeat with this attitude

i should probably stop throwing popcorn at techbros but it's a distraction ok

my pupdog got up from a nap limping on one of her back legs, and it's kinda worrying me, but she doesn't seem to be in pain, will let me touch it, still very much wants food, etc. etc. and this has happened before with a foot where i flipped out and took her to the vet..... .......the next day when she was totally fine and the vet found nothing lol

i may see if half a rimadyl (doggo advil basically) helps in a min

@InspectorCaracal honestly i'm sure you could

either that or my initial assessment is right and purism/librem.one is being run by a marketing manager who saw it as a great moneymaking opportunity, but tried to learn a little of the lingo to smooth over the con, and put on an audiobook about online ethics on while he slept, but it skipped and repeated one bit

so now he can only say 'ethics', rather like

this is becoming a running gag for i feel.

"ethics" okay, how is your company ethical "with ethics!" don't you think if your company is ethical you should acknowledge better how you're using open-source stuff "BUT WE'RE ETHICAL"

"we're against harassment!" okay, how are you doing that "we're against it!" what do you consider harassment "we're against harassment." so... you're against taking any stand about what harassment is, other than being against it. "we're against harassment!"

i honestly do not see the sense in *why* someone would, as a non-bad actor, look at the pre-baked community covenant and go

"ok, now that we've listed examples of how to be a good community member, here's the section about bad shit you shouldn't do. ...let's just say don't do bad things. i know these are all good examples that will let people know we will not tolerate that sort of thing here, thus making it a safe and appealing space. ...but let's just take all that out, we don't need it :)"

Show thread

@InspectorCaracal "well i've never been harassed online so i don't see a need for any of that! it's irrelevant! anyway the marketplace of ideas will handle it :)"

peak TechBro ™️

this is either planned maliciousness, OR a level of naiivete that means the ethical security offers can never be fulfilled.

this is a safe space, but being run by people who think that a safe space can first be achieved by no moderator reports at all (!), and now is emphatically saying safety can be achieved by NOT letting people who are targets of specific types of harassment know they're safe because the space is explicitly against sexism/racism/etc.

...peak techbro.

ultimately it always translates to "we don't publicly post the rules because every single person gets a different version of them to follow, depending on sex, gender, skin color, phase of the moon, and if we like you or not."

aka, get ready for the bff of a mod to get away with murder while you get bounced for eating a hot dog with mustard instead of kechup.

or, the more likely variant in this case? " refuses to list rules because who stays and who goes depends on $$ given"

Show thread

the attribution's right there at least for the open-source community guidelines. but comparing the two?

community-covenant.net/version lays out explicitly bad behavior to avoid.

just says "don't be bad. and if you have any questions about what bad is, privately contact an admin."

listen, i may not be a tech wunderkid, but i've been around for awhile. "follow the rules or else. the rules are all unspoken and we're not going to elaborate more unless it's in private." ...is dodgy.

Show thread

well, and are continuing to be run by "is this just them being hopelessly naiive, or is this some sort of malice"

i'd still think a "hey, we're sorry bout the screw-up" would be in order, as it now just leaves the rules stressing about how they totally will have moderators accepting reports from other instances hanging there awkwardly, smelling of an unfinished scandal.

the effort is commendable - but boy, that removal of examples of harassment is GLARING.

listen, finding an encyclopedia eorzea generator ( luckybancho.ldblog.jp/uncyclop ) and making profiles for all my characters so far on my new home server is... approximately something like being productive, right?
