The next time I’m invited to a party, I’m going to respond with this animated gif because it’s virtually the same as if I’d actually attended.

@hosford42

My parents were not nice people, and I did the same thing. It practically guaranteed I got worse than my siblings got.

The article gives some examples, it's mostly overwhelming emotion. Happy tears, terrified laughter, that kind of thing.

"This behaviour occurs more commonly in individuals who experience dimorphous emotions across a range of situations, and may help to regulate emotions by balancing an overwhelmingly positive emotion with a negative response."

TL:DR - Humans are weird.

Heard the story of the girl throwing starfish into the ocean? A man watching her says "don't you know there are miles of beach and you can't make a difference?"

The girl bends down and scoops up another starfish and gently throws it into the ocean, turns to the man and says "it made a difference to that one".

I often think of this story when world events make me feel powerless. I can't help everyone, but I can help *someone*.

So... if anyone needs me to throw them into the sea, I'm here.

@Autistrain

"We have a huge bias. We live in a patriarchal society."

Maybe part of it is, traditionally, women are trained from birth to mask, whether they're NT or ND. They're not allowed to get angry, or cranky, or speak up too much, or be too loud, or take credit, or...

It could be unique to where I was raised (Utah) but I don't think so.

With foods, I have a whole list of "it must be" and "must never be" things.

Must be Best Foods mayonnaise
Must be Jif Extra Crunchy PB
Must never be 'red delicious' apples

I can go on and on.

This news has caused some people to ask why "women's chess" even exists -- women can compete in the open tournament. The women's competitions were a recognition of just how far behind chess is when it comes to cultivating and welcoming female players.

Not that shocking they are even more far behind when it comes to even knowing what that would mean. (eg not excluding trans women.)

But all this misses the bigger point. They don't want any trans people at all in their games.

"But I hate high pitched sounds (I struggle with Soprano voices)"

Reading this was an "Oh, wow, yes!" thing for me. I've never connected those two things before.

Our landlord's realtor had to enter our apartment to make pictures for an online listing to find new renters.

When we opened the door he was surprised by our masks, like everyone, and nervously asked us if we were sick. We explained no, but underlying condition, blabla, just deal with it. I really have no energy to talk to anyone about my mask anymore.

Then he asked if he should wear a mask as well! I immediately seized the opportunity and said yes! Here you go! Handed him a fresh FFP2 in plastic wrap!

He put it on without complaining and then entered our apartment and did his work. My partner and I were so surprised, exchanging looks. This is a new experience for us. Someone willing to mask for us? No crybaby acts?!

When he was done my partner walked him outside and offered to throw away his mask inside and the realtor said no thanks, he'd rather keep it.

Look, this isn't a big win but it's the biggest mask-win I've ever experienced so I'm taking it.

I was excited when a doctor asked if I'd like him to mask, when he came into the exam room and saw me masked up.
A doctor, in a clinic, where sick people go.

I'm finding a lot of parallels with my experience of coming out, back in my teenage years. There's finding community, finding that I'm not a lone weirdo there's a whole community out there to help and support, and finding there are answers to questions I'd had for a long time.
So far I haven't had much of the stress/grief/anger that I've seen other people describe, just relief.

The attacks center around both - the free, and the charging.
I paid for a series of meetings with Matthew and a few others like me. We "met" each Saturday for what was supposed to be a 1.5 hour (but usually ran longer) series of talking, getting and sharing information, and some random socializing and story--telling. I found it useful. I wouldn't hesitate to pay for another, when scheduling permits.
