the whole thing reads as outrage marketing to me. to the uninformed, that's the tactic of purposefully being outrageous, then rescinding it with a public apology so consumers feel like purchasing that product is positive reinforcement for the company. why give them the time of day and press coverage when they've made it clear that their views haven't changed and that the whole "0 tolerance policy" and donation to an lgbt rights organization is just a PR act

@shagoli Unfortunately, I'm inclined to agree with you on this. $10000 to an lgbt rights org. and a "zero tolerance policy" (that afaict we haven't even seen) don't really mean much to me nowadays precisely because of how easy it is to use it as a magic "make the bad PR go away" pill

FreeBSD

So, I finally fixed my audio issues. Turns out, it has to do with an issue in the kernel that apparently only affects a couple of Dell laptops. A couple hours of recompiling later, though, and it's fixed! The static is gone!

tfw you forget you're literally *compiling a kernel*

Current ADHD mood:
Wait a second! I was compiling the FreeBSD kernel earlier, wasn't I? How's that going?

Giving up car ownership

Pros:
- HEALTHY!
- Save money on fuel and maintenance
- IDK, feel more in touch with the world?

Cons:
- Have to already be in decent shape
- Car drivers hate you on the roads
- Pedestrians hate you on the sidewalk
- Cities won't give you bike lanes
- SWEAT
- Seriously, you're gonna spend all the money you're saving on deodorant because you live in an area that regularly experiences highs of ~40°C during summer :blobonfire:

@melaninpony "All New Hitachi Magic Wand, now with Alexa built-in!"

@maple um. no? but i certainly don't *notice* anything downloading. is that normal?

repetitive attempt at self reassurance

@maple maple is very good robot girl. byte is also very good when beep

worldbuilding, dvakiiri

@azushark It certainly looks interesting! I'd be curious to see where it goes with its grammar. I'm certainly curious on that phonology and what (from the look of the alphabet) it allows and doesn't allow.

FreeBSD

FreeBSD Complain #52:
Why in the fucking worlds does ports insist on reinstalling shit from scratch? Like, I have lang/ruby24 installed. WHY IS IT TRYING TO REINSTALL IT FROM SOURCE?! All I wanted to do was compile Vim with the Motif toolkit. Why are you reinstalling ruby from source?

I need to fuckin' let it go. The more rational part of me knows nothing was meant by it. But gods fucking damn it. It's so damn hard when all I can do is keep coming back to it.

"The worst they can do is say no"
Ain't that a crock of shit. Oh, yeah, sure, they'll only say no. But no fucking hurts. I'd compare it to a punch to the gut, but I've punched myself there enough to be able to tell you what I'd fuckin' prefer, and guess what? It ain't being told no.

Man, rejection sensitivity is a fucking *bitch*. Someone fucking end me now.

@wigglytuffitout And, of course, the techbros love to say "Oh, it's just learning from the data." Yeah, guess what? The data contains **years** of prejudice. That computer ain't learning from some pure, neutral set. It's not like trying to teach it to recognize the number three. It's learning from our shittiness. The computer can't tell right from wrong, so if you feed it all the wrong of the past centuries, without feeding it *massive* corrections...

@wigglytuffitout That last point can't be emphasized enough. **IT'S HAPPENING NOW**. People got all up in arms about the racist webcam years ago, but what they don't realize is that that racist webcam's cousin is now making important decisions in areas like the court system or the housing system. And it's not much better about not being racist. If anything, it might just be a bit worse.
