I just learned that the words short, shirt, and skirt all come from the same origin, and that the short in shortbread is an archaic use of short meaning "easily crumbled"; all of these come from a proto-indo-european root meaning "to cut off a piece"

our housemate plays the radio, and it's currently playing some pop song while I listen to some funk on my headphones. But the drums in the pop song are louder than usual, so I'm getting this weird effect where the piece I'm listening to now has 2 drumlines, arranged in a complex syncopated rhythm and it's really cool

Looking for an alternative to Facebook? May I recommend Dreamwidth, the successor to Livejournal. It's a great place if you want to blog/journal about more personal things, since it has a simple and solid privacy model. (You can also post publicly.)

It's owned by nice people, too, and is supported by user subscriptions, although you can be a free user if you need to.

Most importantly, it's set up so you *control your space*—you have admin-like control over the discussions on your own posts!
